I Did Not Make It

by Barry Moltz on February 17, 2010

I have got some bad news. I didn’t make it this year. I have a letter to prove it.

Today, in the mail, I received the dreaded letter from American Airlines. My frequent flyer status has been downgraded. I didn’t fly enough miles during the Great Recession in 2009 to remain Executive Platinum. I am only Platinum this year.

Goodbye to always sitting in first class…

Goodbye to always getting on standby…

Goodbye to not waiting in line…

Goodbye to everyone being so darn nice to me at American Airlines…

The good news is that I did get a very gentle letter from American Airlines explaining this unfortunate set of events. It begins:

Dear Mr. Moltz,

As we begin a new elite membership year, you may already be aware that your 2009 flight activity does not support the continuation of your current elite status…Please know that you remain a valued customer and that we appreciate the business you were able to give us and the loyalty you have shown.

You can be proud to carry the enclosed AAdvantage Platinum card and enjoy a higher level of elite recognition than most of our members.”

How did you make out this year? Make me feel better and tell me you didn’t make it either.
